Whether we participate in athletics in a recreational capacity or are competitive athletes, it is important to understand the role of sweat.

Sweating functions to maintain body temperature when it is hot and during exercise. The eccrine glands are the most numerous sweat glands and are the main source of sweat. The body has nearly 2-4 million glands that cover most surfaces of the body, with a primary role in regulating temperature. To a lesser extent, the most challenging is the apocrine gland, located in the axilla, breast, face, scalp, and perineum; it is found in areas that have hair growth (Baker, 2019). These glands are responsible for “body odor,” which the deodorant industry makes billions from annually (Grandview Research, 2026).

Sweat is made up mostly of water, sodium, chloride and to a lesser extent potassium, along with some trace amounts of minerals and vitamins. Everyone sweats differently; some people sweat more than others. As a result, some people excrete more sodium and chloride than others (Baker, 2019). Of course, the additional factors- exercising in hot vs. cold temperatures, the intensity of the activity, age, sex, sodium intake, and how hydrated you are will impact your ability to sweat. According to Baker et al. (2022), the main factor affecting sweat rate is the intensity of the activity.

Knowing your sweat rate can be an essential tool for your training. One simple way is to weigh yourself pre- and post-activity. To do this, you need to weigh yourself in the nude and after you empty your bladder. Monitor your fluid intake during your run or activity. When you have completed your workout, dry off and weigh yourself nude with an empty bladder. There are also online calculators: Gatorade Sports Science Institute https://share.google/UMsgCmiUufmM5asYq or Sweat Rate Calculator https://sweatratecalculator.com/. There are also patches that you can purchase that measure sweat rate and sodium loss: Nix Biosensors or Hydro Sweat Sensors. The most accurate method is lab testing (Atkins et al., 2026), which can be done through Precision Fuel and Hydration Centers https://www.precisionhydration.com/sweat-testing/our-sweat-tests/.

Knowing your sweat rate can help you prepare for those intense workouts. Proper hydration is essential; it should occur before exercise, and for most adults, intake should be 2-4 liters/day, increasing to 8-16 liters/day in hotter months. Studies have shown that hyperhydration through consuming fluids that contain glycerol improves fluid retention (Jardine et al., 2023). Studies have also found that consuming sodium pre-exercise helps to improve hydration (McCubbin, 2025). Typically, consuming between 275 and 420 mg four hours before exercise helps to achieve hydration. Consuming sodium post-workout will help to restore hydration.

Sweat is essential for thermoregulation. Understanding your sweat rate can help you properly hydrate, maintain sodium levels and prevent the negative consequences of dehydration during intense exercise. You can use simple online calculators or seek out a lab setting to help you create your hydration plan. You just need to make sure that understanding your sweat rate and hydration needs is a part of your overall program so you can keep going.

References

Atkins, W.
